Peter Tavy Inn, Dartmoor

The Peter Tavy Inn, Dartmoor is nestled in the small hamlet of Peter Tavy, is a typical old traditional village pub. Stone floors, low ceilings and a snug which was perfect for us to sit in and relax after our excursion across Dartmoor.

The menu, listed on a chalk board by the bar, was reasonably extensive and comprised of traditional, simple pub fayre – roast beef, ham and leek pie, ham, egg & chips, fish dishes and vegetarian dishes. Everything you want from a good village pub. The lady serving chatted through which of the dishes were suitable for me – there wasn’t a lot of choice per se, but the option of a roast is always a winner with me. They understood about the gravy and were very happy to make me some gluten free – despite how busy they were – and they were busy. The warning about ensuring we reserved a table was not unfounded.

We ordered baked avocado stuffed with prawns to start – we thought we would share so we could fit three courses in! It was delicious. The avocado was cooked enough so that it remained firm and yet was hot. The prawns in mayonnaise were perfect – just the correct amount of mayo to complement the avocado.

For main I ordered the roast beef and hubby ordered the steak and stilton pie which he said was ‘delish’. My beef was a little chewy, but the rest of the roast dinner was very well cooked, the vegetables tender, and yet firm, and the roasties were just how I like them.

Could we fit dessert in – of course we can – we’re hardy like that! After much ‘umming and arrring’ over what to have the lady serving (I think she was the owner) suggested having meringue with pineapple and ginger. At little hesitantly, we ordered it to give it a go – and I am so glad we did – it was lovely! Spiced with just the right amount of ginger, the tartness of the pineapple took away the sweetness of the meringue. I’m not a real fan of cream, but it was perfect in the meringue. A real treat and one I would definitely order again.

A great pub, very welcoming and accommodating, but very busy and definitely book for lunch.
